Tasting | Crane Lake Gewurtztraminer

Name: Crane Lake
Variety: Gewurtztraminer
Region: California
Country: USA
Year: 2013
Price: $5.95

Winery Review: Slightly high-toned notions of rose petal mingle with lemon on nose and palate of this lightly sweet, richly textured yet balanced Gewürztraminer. This is not as heady as you may expect and will be a treat with spicy Asian dishes. Lychee and rose petal make another very fetching appearance on the finish.

My Review: I had this with Himalayan Curry Cafe and I absolutely love this. The sweetness evened out the spicy flavors from the curry and it ended up being a pairing I will definitely try again and recommend to other people.

Tasting | Indwe Pinotage

Name: Indwe
Variety: Pinotage
Country: South Africa
Year: 2013
Price: $5.95

Winery Review: “A disclaimer: I have never cared much for Pinotage, the indigenous South African grape variety, but this 2013 Pinotage from Indwe, named after the country's national bird, the blue crane, comes across like a light Pinot Noir. Subtle notes of cherries, spice and forest floor are followed by a round, light to medium-bodied, pure, seductive, well-crafted wine.” Drink now-2016.

My Review: I didn't like this wine at all. It was bitter and I can't exactly explain what flavors I disliked but maybe it would have been better if I had eaten food with it.

Tasting | Tonnino Grillo

Name: Tonnino
Variety: Grillo
Region: Sicily
Country: Italy
Year: 2014
Price: $7.95

Winery Review: Fruit-forward and tangy, this light-bodied, snappy white offers flavors of guava, apricot, candied grapefruit zest and stone. Drink now. 20,000 cases made.

My Review: I loved the fruitiness of this wine. It was flavorful but still pleasant/easy to drink. I would enjoy drinking this frequently. No food involved.

Tasting | Codirosso Chianti

Name: Codirosso
Variety: Chianti
Region: Tuscany
Country: Italy
Year: 2014
Price: $7.95

Winery Review: Ruby red color with purple reflections.  Intense vinous bouquet with hints of violets and dark cherry fruit. The flavor is full of ripe fruit and a hint of spice. It is well balanced and dry. The finish is persistent and satisfying.

My Review: I loved this wine. After understanding what dry/sweet means, I realized that dry, red wines are some of my favorites. No food involved.

Tasting | Palacio de Bornos Verdejo

Name: Palacio de Bornos
Variety: Verdejo
Region: Rueda
Country: Spain
Year: 2013
Price: $5.95

Winery Review: Zesty and clean, with pure grapefruit and passion fruit aromas. It’s charged up but perfectly balanced, with bright, focused citrus and pineapple flavors. Lemony acidity keeps the finish rolling, then throw in some chive and fresh greens and you have a spot-on Verdejo.

My Review: Although I did not initially enjoy what I though to be a "sulfur-ish" taste, I enjoyed the citrus flavors that followed through quickly after the initial sip. No food involved.

Tasting | Be Bright Pinot Grigio

Name: Be Bright
Variety: Pinot Grigio
Region: Napa Valley, California
Country: USA
Year: 2013
Price: $5.95

Winery Review:

Color: Only the faintest hint of yellow
Nose: Lemons, Peaches
Taste: Alcohol, Lemons, and Peaches
Paired: Nothing

I'm sensing a trend with these Be. Wines in that they all lean to the boozey side. Sadly this one suffered from too much alcohol and acidity in the front of the mouth and in the swallow to be very enjoyable.
- Danny Tapanes | 1.5/5

My Review: I tasted and smelled sulfur. The wine itself was not that bad but the sulfur really turned me off. Drinkable with a meal maybe, but it is far from my first choice. I did not have this with food.

Tasting | Yellow Tail Red Moscato

Name: Yellow Tail
Variety: Red Moscato
Region: Yenda
Country: Australia
Year: N/A
Price: $5.95

Winery Review: Deep ruby, small bubbles and showing a grapy, berry and tropical fruit and floral nose. Medium sweet (55g/L sugar content), fine mousse, flavours of sweedish berry, passion fruit, strawberry and citrus, with a medium finish. A wine like this is really best with spicy or sweet foods. This is a standout pairing to compliment chocolate chip cheesecake with a strawberry, blueberry and port reduction compote. The bubbles cleanse the palate between bites and flavours are in perfect harmony with the berry compote.Tasted December 2015.
- Sean O'Reagan | 87/100

My Review: I thought it was extremely fruity and sweet. Easy and pleasant to drink. I did not have this with food.

Tasting | Dynamite Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc

Name: Dynamite Vineyards
Variety: Sauvignon Blanc
Region: Lake County, California
Country: USA
Year: 2013
Price: $5.95

Winery Review: The wine exhibits intense lime zest and tropical fruit aromas with hints of passion fruit, guava, and mango. Sweet grapefruit lime lemongrass highlighted by a subtle nuance of anise. I would love this wine before or during a meal. It would pair nicely with appetizers.
- wineexpress.com | 4/5

My Review: I loved the white-grape flavoring. This had the perfect amount of sweetness. It quenched my thirst with the a taste I would love to try again! I did not have this with food.

Tasting | Yellowtail Cabernet-Merlot

Name: Yellow Tail
Variety: Cabernet - Merlot
Region: Yenda
Country: Australia
Year: 2014
Price: $4.95

Winery Review: The Cabernet-Merlot (the 2010 for us) fell in the middle of the pack. Had a sweet cherry vanilla smell to it with a little heat (both from the alcohol, which mellowed out after a while, and from the light baking spice/nutmeg flavors). And there was little bitterness on the finish. It was a little sweeter than the straight Cabernet, which most of us preferred.
- Seema Gunda | seriouseats.com

My Review: I cannot say much about the specifics but out of all the wines I tried that day, this one had the boldest (and best) flavor. I typically prefer the flavor of red wine over white wine, and I've got to say...I really like this red wine. I did not have this with food.

Tasting | Beringer Smooth Red Blend

Name: Beringer: Founder's Estate
Variety: Smooth Red Blend
Region: Napa Valley, California
Country: USA
Year: 2012
Price: $5.95

Winery Review: Beringer Vineyards philosophy - "To thine own self be true". Don't be hating...I like California wine, in fact prefer it and this is a superb example of why...Raspberry and plum on the nose with hints of that jamminess coming through on the tongue. Subtle oak and soft tannins make this a very drinkable red on its own.
- Terri Kerbrat | vivino.com

My Review: This was sweeter than the Yellow Tail Merlot and in my opinion, easier on the taste buds and therefore easier to drink. When it comes to flavor, I really enjoyed the raspberry. I did not have this with food. I was actually very thirsty and hungry at the time so the sweetness was very pleasant.

First Blog Assignment | My Experiences with Wine

Unlike beer and liquor, wine is truly something I never had an interest in until I actually  turned twenty-one. Most of the wine I had tried before then either came from a bag-in-a-box or a bottle costing under ten dollars. In the past, I have been quite neutral to it; drinking it when offered, but never actively seeking it and I could not say that I necessarily enjoyed the taste when I did get the chance to try some. However, in the past year, I've done a little bit of hands-on research, and here are some of my findings!

At this point, I've probably tried about 25-30 distinct wines. I am not exactly sure if that is a small, medium, or large amount of wines for a twenty-one year old to have tried, but I can tell you this: I cannot actually put a specific taste to the name/brand of any of those wines. I can obviously tell the difference between red and white wine (regardless of the difference in color), but it gets tricky when I try to remember how Brand A's bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon differs from Brand B's bottle. Also, I struggle to really be familiar with the differences between types of wine in general (Pinot Noir vs. Merlot).

The bottom line: I still lack a LOT of knowledge when it comes to wines. I am just beginning to see the distinctions between what I have tried/been trying and have learned a little over the past year, but there is much left to discover and many wines to taste. I am excited to continue this journey, and hope this class will help me in doing so!
