Tasting | Tonnino Pinot Grigio

Name: Tonnino
Variety: Pinot Grigio
Year: 2014
Region: Sicily
Country:  Italy
Price: $7.95

Winery Review: Tonnino’s exotic example of Pinot Grigio has a straw to pale gold color. It is fresh and clean on the nose with fruity notes of pear, green apple and white peaches. The palate is true to the nose with a fresh acidity, coriander and lime notes followed by a crisp finish. This wine pairs well with youthful aperitifs, clams or mussels, pastas and risotto dishes.

My Review: I did not have this with food. Pleasant acidity, very citrus-y as well but not to a point where its overwhelming. Nice notes of pear in this one as well. It smells almost soapy. It tasted pretty good (one of the better pinot grigio wines I have tried).

Tasting | Maipe Torrontes

Name: Maipe
Variety: Torrontes
Year: 2014
Region: Mendoza
Country:  Argentina
Price: $7.95

Winery Review: The wine has a spring-like nose of fresh white peaches, pears, green apple, green melon and hints of jasmine and rose petals. On the palate, it has a beautiful structure and acidity along with fruit flavors and plenty of body. Well-balanced, this wine displays a pleasant freshness with citrus notes and a long finish.

My Review: I did not have this with food. This was extremely floral on the nose. A little too much with the acidic, citrus notes for me, but I did enjoy the pear flavors. I would like to try this with dinner.

Tasting | Duboeuf Noveau

Name: Georges Duboeuf
Variety: Noveau
Year: 2015
Region: Beajolais
Country:  France
Price: $5.95

Winery Review: George Duboeuf is THE king of Beaujolais.  His wines are full of pop, charm and great flavor and his Beaujolais Nouveau is no exception.  A cornucopia of expressive fruit wrapped in an almost-bubblegum-like frame; it is the flagship Nouveau.

My Review: I did not have this with food. I tasted so many different flavors of fruit (grape, blueberry, raspberry, cherry) and it was so pleasantly balanced with smokiness.

Tasting | Crane Lake Shiraz

Name: Crane Lake
Variety: Shiraz
Year: 2013
Region: California
Country:  USA
Price: $5.95

Winery Review: Beautiful ruby appearance, with blackberry and pepper notes. Tannins and fruit marry well for a soft finish. This wine pairs well with sharp cheddar cheese and hazelnuts. Also try it along with roast lamb at Easter time, veal marsala, or grilled salmon.

My Review: I did not have this with food. I tasted spiced, red meat. I also got hints of sun-dried peppers and raisins. I thought this was very complex and enjoyed it very much. I will have to try with dinner soon.

Tasting | Crane Lake Riesling

Name: Crane Lake
Variety: Riesling
Year: 2013
Region: California
Country:  USA
Price: $5.95

Winery Review: The trademark German red grape varietal Dornfelder has a lovely purity of soft red berry fruit. Integrated soft tannins combined with forward fruit flavors make for a perfectly balanced everyday sipping wine.
Great with grilled red meat, sausage and chicken. Best served slightly chilled.

My Review: I did not have this with food. This was pretty easy for me to drink. No overwhelming sulfur aromas but it manages to give off a controlled fruitiness that was quite pleasant.

Wine & Cheese Pairing Night!

Overview

A group of friends (4 of us, total) met on 3/17 to try out wines/cheeses while making good conversation and enjoying the Thursday evening. We thought it would be an event that would last an hour or two, but we found ourselves drinking and laughing late into the night (almost 3 AM). This not only had to do with the fact that we wanted to keep drinking once we felt an initial buzz, but also because the wine and cheese combinations were so enjoyable in the first place. Here's a little peek into what our night was like.

Cheeses

Havarti

This was the cheese that I brought to the table for the night. Nobody really liked it but me. One of my friends was able to enjoy its pairing with wine, but the other two disliked it regardless of what it was paired with. The big turn-off for them was the "stinky-foot" smell it gave off. That certainly sounds gross, but the Havarti itself was quite amazing in my opinion.

Our descriptive words: smoky, bold, strong, creamy, buttery, stinky, crumbly

Gouda

This was a cheese that we all knew we would enjoy. Since all of us have tried Gouda and are fans, we decided to bring this one with us tonight as a "safe" choice. Needless to say, we all liked it.

Our descriptive words: Stiff, crumbly, old, mild

Brie

This cheese had us blurting out a bunch of mixed opinions. I am personally a huge fan of Brie, but we all seemed to have differing opinions. One of us did not like it with wine, but loved it in general. Another was the exact opposite! I loved it with the wine, although I think it was mostly because I just love Brie!

Our descriptive words: Cauliflower, metallic, creamy, chlorine

Wines

Lindeman's Merlot 2015

This wine is from southeast Australia. It has soft, elegant flavors blending the best part of fruit from each vintage. It seems to engulf the tongue with flavors and coat the palate.

Tastes/smells: Deep blackberry, plums, smoky, oaky, sour, tart, chocolate

Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon 1876

This wine is from Napa Valley, California. It has a lot of sweetness and fruit. Really flavorful and smooth.

Tastes/smells: Sweet, fruity, chocolate, tart, berries, raspberries, sour grapes, tart, fully bodied, bold aroma

Fish Eye Pinot Grigio 2015

The only white wine to make it on the list that night. I thought it had a great balance of fruitiness and sulfur-y boldness. This one was very strong on the aftertaste.

Tastes/smells: Pears, melons, peach, tropical fruit, sulfur, tart

Pairings

Lindeman's Merlot 2015

with Havarti:
- Enhances fruitiness of wine
- Weakens strong smell of the cheese so the pleasant parts of the taste are more flavorful on the palate

with Gouda:
- Seems to clash, heightening the flavors of the wine til the sharpness of the clash becomes overwhelming

with Brie:
- Makes the wine more sour
- Makes the wine taste drier

Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon 1876

with Havarti:
- Complements well, mellows the wine in a good way; weakens the sourness and brings out the sweetness
- Makes the Havarti linger on the palate

with Gouda:
- Clashes; not smooth at all, makes the gouda taste like rubber

with Brie:
- Creates a neutral flavor; brings out the cheese and made it taste more pleasant

Fish Eye Pinot Grigio 2015

with Havarti:
- Makes the cheese taste like delicious mushrooms

with Gouda:
- Makes the cheese taste better; it overpowers the bold sulfur elements of the wine

with Brie:
- Makes the wine taste like champagne, also enhances the creaminess of the Brie

Conclusion

We ended up having a lot more fun than we thought we would and the night was a blast. I enjoyed almost all of the pairings at least to a certain degree and had a great time sharing with my friends. My favorite pairings were Lindeman Merlot/Havarti and Fish Eye Pinot Grigio/Brie. It was nice to learn a lot about wine in such a fun, interactive way. We will be doing this again soon!

Tasting | Dona Sol Blend

Name: Dona Sol
Variety: Shiraz, Petite Syrah, & Symphony
Region: California
Country:  USA
Price: $6.95

Winery Review: Shiraz has a unique jammy fruit character that is well represented in the Sweet Red. Both on the nose and on the palate, jammy fruit, like strawberries, cherry pie and red licorice, entices the senses and pair well with cheeses and desserts.

My Review: I had no food with this wine. Shiraz is my favorite type of wine and this bottle beats any of the alternatives I have tried. It was super sweet but the amount of flavor balances it out very well to make for a pleasant experience. I will buy this bottle very soon.

Tasting | Velvet Crush Blend

Name: Velvet Crush
Variety: Merlot, Cabernet, Sauvignon, & Petite Sirah
Region: California
Country:  USA
Price: $6.95

Winery Review: Velvety smooth texture just like its name. Soft tannins and lush dark fruit character. Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah bring backbone and character, while the Merlot balances out the blend for a soft, smooth texture.

My Review: I had no food with this wine. I got hints of dark chocolate, raspberry, plum, and a little bit of vanilla as well. Not too oak-heavy but I did taste a little bit of that as well. I would recommend this wine.

Tasting | Grand Cru Pinot Noir

Name: Grand Cru
Variety: Pinot Noir
Region: California
Country:  USA
Year: 2013
Price: $6.95

Winery Review: This ruby-colored wine has aromas of raspberry, cherry and a hint of vanilla. Flavors of cherry and plum lead to a soft velvety finish. This wine can be enjoyed by itself. It is also an excellent accompaniment with Brie, goat cheese and smoked salmon. Lamb shanks and pork tenderloin are a favorite main dishes to pair with this wine.

My Review: I had no food with this wine. It smelled smoky and sweet but tasted earthy. It didn't bite very hard so it was still pretty easy to drink. Not bad but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it.

Tasting | Prime Brume Garganega

Name: Prime Brume
Variety: Garganega
Region: Soave
Country:  Italy
Year: 2014
Price: $6.95

Winery Review: Pale color. Fruity, floral minerally inviting aromas of passion fruit, white grapefruit, spice poached pear, and papaya with a lean, racy, bone-dry medium body and a smooth, complex, long lemon, passion fruit, raw hazelnut, and wet stones finish with no tannins and light oak. From the tantalizing nose full of exotic fruit, citrus and minerality thru to the long, crisp finish, this soave can seamlessly go from cocktail hour thru to vibrantly flavored dishes.
- Tastings.com (91/100)

My Review: To be honest, it looked a little watered down and gave me the impression that it would taste like nothing. I had this with no food but I could enjoy this one with or without it. I know there is a lot of fruit but I'm not sure how to describe the wealth of flavors/aromas

Tasting | Quintas Melgaco Blue Vinho Verde

Name: Quintas Melgaco Blue
Variety: Vinho Verde
Region: Vinho Verde
Country:  Portugal
Year: 2013
Price: $5.95

Winery Review: Refreshingly crisp white wine from Portugal--Vinho Verde is soft, light and refreshing, and is an uncompromising and ideal wine for everyday pleasure. Its bright color and pineapple aromas are followed by citrus notes. The palate is clean and fresh. Vinho Verde is an excellent accompaniment to fish and shell fish, white meats and salads.

My Review: I did not have this with food but I was really craving some tender meat after sipping some of this. It was very easy to drink and showed a hint of fresh lemon.
